What Causes A Headache?

Headaches and migraines can be caused by a wide range of circumstances. Some of the more common and easily identifiable causes include:

  • Stress
  • Tension and high blood pressure
  • Bad posture
  • Eyesight strain
  • Dehydration
  • The side effect of painkillers

That being said, intense headaches and migraines that occur suddenly and with high intensity could be a warning sign of a serious underlying condition. If you don’t normally experience headaches and have not put your body through any notable stress, you should consult with a health professional to be safe!

Migraine

Migraines are extreme versions of headaches that can be completely incapacitating. Someone who is experiencing a migraine is extremely sensitive to sound and light, visibly recoiling or cringing when exposed to them. Migraines can also trigger nausea and vomiting, vertigo, dizziness among other side effects. The pain you experience is an inflammatory response that targets the brainstem and dilates the vessels in the head and neck causing pain and pulsating.

Migraine is a common disorder affecting 2-15% of the world’s population. It is more prevalent in the productive years (late teens to 50s) and in women than in men (3:1). An estimated 100 million workdays or school days are lost annually because of migraines.

Tension Headache

Episodic tension-type headache, known as the “ordinary” headache, is less disabling but more common (as high as 80%) than migraine. It also occurs in episodes, mostly lasting a few hours, with varying severity depending on what is causing the headache. Often described as pressure or tightness, like a band around the head, sometimes spreading into the neck. It is significantly less intense than a migraine but can still occur daily or very frequently.

Chronic tension-type headache occurs, by definition, on >15 days a month and can be daily and unremitting. It affects 2-3% of adults, who may be substantially disabled and chronically off work as a result.
